What Should Be My Goal in Life?

What is your goal in life?

If you ask 100 people on the street what their main goal in life is, you'd probably get an amazing array of answers. Some would say something like, “I want to be happily married” or if they are already married: “I want to be healthy and grow old with my spouse”.Others might say: “I want to have a successful career and provide well for my children and even my grandchildren.”Some who are focused on possessions might say they want a large, nice house in a safe, thriving neighborhood, filled with things that they love.Still others might say something really community-focused like: “I want to give back to others and help our neighborhood become a better place.”

The First Thing

All of these goals are nice. And they might even be God-honoring. But they shouldn't be the first thing that comes to mind when confronted on the street.... because they shouldn't be our main focus.I'm not pointing fingers at anybody. At different times of my life, I might have had variations on these answers.Reading through the Bible has been revolutionary in changing my perspective on this. You might be asking... well then...What is your goal in life? I'm not pointing fingers at anybody. At different times of my life, I might have had variations on these answers. Reading through the Bible has been revolutionary in changing my perspective on this. You might be asking... well then... What should be my goal in life? “We make it our goal to please Him.” 2 Corinthians 5:9 The problem with the goals listed above is that they are self-focused. We should live our lives for one singular goal- to please our Father in Heaven. “He died for everyone so that those who receive His new life will no longer live for themselves. Instead, they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them.” 2 Corinthians 5:15 What does it mean to no longer live for yourself? Ask God what this looks like for you. It is slightly different for each person, all within the framework of what God tells us in His Word. The Bible is God's instruction book for our lives. The goals of our lives should be the opposite of the world's goals for themselves. The world wants more money, more fame, a bigger house, a better looking body and face. They focus on how the rich are living and try to find how to imitate them in as many ways as possible. Do that. But with the Maker of your soul! See the character traits that He has for you and seek to imitate CHRIST. Here's some character traits of Christ that you could start with, otherwise known as the fruit of the Spirit. “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!” Galatians 5:22-23

Fruit of the Spirit

Here are some character traits of Christ that you could start with, otherwise known as the fruit of the Spirit.“But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!” Galatians 5:22-23Be full of love and joyful. Let people see your life and say that you are patient.Show kindness to others. Be good to those who aren't good to you.Faithfulness to Christ and faithfulness to your spouse.Speak gently with self-control.Deny yourself things that you otherwise would do, eat, or spend money on.

Those are your goals.

And they are unpopular in the world. They are even contrary to our flesh. But popular in the Father's eyes.
