5 Creative Prayer Ideas For Kids
Don’t let prayer become stiff... let your children pray in ways that are logical and interesting to them.Jesus went so far as to say that we should all have childlike faith.I can’t help but think that God treasures the sweet, delicate prayers from toddlers and elementary age students, as well as the prayers from the pre-teens and teens that are growing more comfortable with the idea of prayer. These ideas work for all ages, and with a little guidance, your child will love prayer and will have a vibrant walk with the Lord. So, here's 5 creative prayer ideas for kids! Let me know of any you would add.
List Prayers - Pray About the Little Things
It's important to teach your child that Jesus cares about all of the little joys in their life. As early as possible, start list praying with them. My 2.5 year old son is really into trucks and we practice this every night. I start by saying "Thank you God for...." and he knows "Oh, this is the time that I list all of my favorite things" and when he can't think of anything else, we both say "A-MEN!" and go to sleep. Praying with your child about the things they are excited about will associate prayer with excitement and joy. That's a wonderful gift to give your child.
Prayer Walk
After dinner, go for a walk together and look purposely for the things you’re thankful to God for. Roads, sidewalks, blooming flowers, trees, bird songs, neighbors, and more. There's so much to be thankful for! Your kids will enjoy this time, even if they protest at first.
Christmas Card Prayers
Have you ever wondered what to do with those Christmas Photo Cards you receive from friends, family, and neighbors? Save them all, hole punch, and put them on a binder ring. Keep it in your kitchen or dining room. Go through them and pray for one family every night at your dinner table. Circulate this throughout the whole year. I know a family that does this and I always make sure to send them a Christmas Card, because who doesn't want to receive prayers like this? So sweet.
Prayer Journal
I love this idea because it's tangible which is so important for kids. This prayer journal is so cute, and kids will love keeping track of their prayers and seeing how God answers their prayers. You can do it in a regular journal, or if your kid is the type that would commit more if it was a special gift, check out this kid's journal designed for prayer.
The 5 Finger Prayer
This might be the be the most tangible of this creative prayer ideas for kids list because it's very visible and extremely tangible. Each finger is a prayer reminder for a specific person or group of people.
- The thumb is for the people that are closest to us, like our family and close friends.
- The index finger (pointer finger) is the finger that points the way, so pray for those who teach, instruct and heal us. (Like your pastor, teachers, and doctor)
- The middle finger, our tallest, is for our leaders.
- The ring finger, our weakest finger, for those who are weak, sick or in need of help.
- The pinky is for ourselves. We should be the smallest and we should pray for our needs after praying for others first.
